VFA 31 was formed in 1935 under her original designation of VF 1B making the squadron the second oldest active Navy squadron. In that time the “Tomcatters” has flown a wide range of aircraft, from the F2F to the F/A 18E. They have set a few records as well. VFA 31 was deployment buddies with the USS Saratoga for 24 years. They’re the only active Naval squadron with aerial victories in three separate conflicts, WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. 31 also launched and trapped the last F 14 combat mission and last F 14 flight ever from NAS Oceana to Republic Airport. Some notable pilots to sport Felix the Cat include Butch O’Hare and Charles Lindbergh.
The nearly 84-year-old squadron is currently stationed at NAS Oceana and is operating the F/A 18E Super Hornet. They’d like to remind you that “We get ours at night”. You can too, in this whiskey glass.
